What is True Love?

What is True Love?

In Islam, true love is not limited to worldly romance or physical attraction; it is deeply spiritual and rooted in faith, sincerity, and purity of intention. It is guided by the teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah, emphasizing love for the sake of Allah (SWT).

1. True Love with Allah (SWT)

The highest form of love in Islam is the love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. This love is shown by:

  • Obeying His commands.
  • Avoiding what He has forbidden.
  • Preferring His pleasure over worldly desires.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:165)

2. True Love Between Husband and Wife

Marriage in Islam is built on mawaddah (affection), rahmah (mercy), and sakinah (tranquility). True love in marriage means:

  • Caring for each other sincerely.
  • Protecting each other’s dignity.
  • Supporting one another in faith and life.

The Qur’an beautifully describes this:

“And among His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy.” (Surah Ar-Rum 30:21)

3. True Love for the Prophet ﷺ

A believer’s love for Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is part of true faith. Loving him means following his Sunnah, respecting his teachings, and sending blessings upon him.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his father, his child, and all the people.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

4. True Love Among People (For the Sake of Allah)

Loving someone for the sake of Allah — whether a friend, spouse, or relative — is a pure and selfless love. It is not based on wealth, beauty, or status, but on faith and goodness.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever loves for Allah, hates for Allah, gives for Allah, and withholds for Allah has completed his faith.” (Abu Dawood)

In summary:
True love in Islam is pure, selfless, and everlasting — centered on Allah, His Messenger ﷺ, and relationships built on sincerity, respect, and mercy. It is not just about feelings but about actions that lead to eternal happiness in this life and the Hereafter.

Would you like me to also share a short Islamic love story example (like that of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Khadijah RA) that reflects this concept of true love?
