In Islam, love (محبت / عشق) is understood in a pure, balanced, and purposeful way. It is not just an emotion but also a path of spiritual growth and responsibility. Scholars and Sufis describe different stages of love, especially when it comes to the love of Allah (ﷻ), the Prophet ﷺ, family, and spouse.
🌿 Stages of Love in Islam
1. Love of Allah (ﷻ)
- The highest and purest form of love.
- Quran says:
“But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:165) - True believers place Allah above all desires, attachments, and relationships.
2. Love of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
- After Allah, the most important love is for His Messenger ﷺ.
- The Prophet ﷺ said:
“None of you will have faith until I am more beloved to him than his father, his children, and all of mankind.” (Bukhari & Muslim) - Loving him means following his Sunnah, respecting his teachings, and sending salutations (Durood).
3. Love for Parents & Family
- Quran emphasizes kindness and love to parents:
“And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents…” (Luqman 31:14) - Love for parents, children, spouse, and relatives is part of rahmah (mercy).
4. Love Between Husband & Wife
- Considered a blessing from Allah.
- Quran says:
“And He placed between you affection (mawaddah) and mercy (rahmah).” (Surah Ar-Rum 30:21) - True marital love is based on respect, kindness, and faith.
5. Brotherly Love for Fellow Muslims
- The Prophet ﷺ said:
“None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” (Bukhari & Muslim) - This stage reflects selfless love that strengthens the Ummah.
6. Stages of Spiritual Love (Sufi Perspective)
Scholars of Tasawwuf (Islamic spirituality) describe deeper stages:
- Mahabbah (محبت): Basic love for Allah.
- Uns (انس): Intimacy and closeness with Allah.
- Shawq (شوق): Longing to meet Allah.
- Ishq (عشق): Intense love that overtakes the heart.
- Ridha (رضا): Contentment with Allah’s will.
✅ In Islam, love always has boundaries—it must not lead to sin, disobedience, or distraction from Allah. The highest love is for Allah (ﷻ), and all other forms of love are perfected when rooted in that.
